About Bone Morphogenic Protein

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) is an isolated protein that induces specific cells in the body to form new cartilage and bone. During surgery, the BMP binds with a collagen sponge that is placed into the boney defect. The sponge resorbs (or disappears) over time, stimulating the body to produce new bone.

Use of BMP can eliminate the need to harvest bone from the patients, which avoids donor site pain and complications from the graft harvest site.
